PlayOn Plugin API

The PlayOn Plugin API allows content publishers to add their video content to the PlayOn platform. We are currently still in the preliminary design phases of the plugin architecture. If you are a content publisher and are interested in adding your videos to PlayOn, please contact us for more information.

Official PlayOn Plugins

We've teamed up with Revision3 to create the first official PlayOn Plugin (still in alpha).

To install, download the Revision3 plugin installer. Save the installer executable to your Desktop or some place easy to find, and run it. If the installation is successful, restart your PlayOn Server and PlayOn Settings for the changes to take effect.

Remember -- this is still experimental, so use at your own risk! Note also that the Revision3 plugin currently requires a higher-end PC to work. Lower and mid-range PC's may have trouble keeping up with the video transcoding.

Distributing your own Plugins

Our intention with the PlayOn Plugin API is to allow content providers and third-party developers to enrich the PlayOn experience for everyone's benefit. By developing or distributing a plugin for the PlayOn platform, you are bound by the terms and conditions of the PlayOn software license agreement and of the PlayOn Plugin API.

Although we are not affiliated with their site, we highly recommend you take a look at playonplugins.com. The development community there are doing a fantastic job of generating new plugins, as well as providing great feedback to us on our new API itself.

Development Tools and Documentation

If you're interested in creating your own plugin for PlayOn, we have written some documentation and sample code to help you get started. Please note that this API is still in preliminary alpha design stages, so we apologize in advance if the API changes in the future!

Here's what you need to get started:

Sample code. This is a .NET 2.0 Visual Studio 2005 project, written in C#.
Experimental installer generator. You can use this to bundle your plugin file to make installations a breeze.

Third party tools:

Plugin Debugger. The folks at playonplugins.com have created this useful tool to make plugin development more efficient.
