If anyone finds out how to opt out of Silverlight on Netflix, please post!

Hi all-

I opted "in" before realizing that it would break PlayOn (and before realizing that Netflix wasn't giving users an obvious way to opt back out.)

If anyone finds out how to Opt out of Silverlight on Netflix, please post! Thanks. AL

No use ...they are

No use ...they are transitioning over to Silverlight in the very near future. Even if you don't "opt in" your account will most likely automatically swap over within a month or two.

Re: No use ...they are

That's our understanding as well. It's a shame. In any case, we are still cranking away (yes even on the weekend) to try to migrate to the new Silverlight Netflix player.

We've voiced our discontent to Netflix. Hopefully many of you have as well!

m$ partnering with them

no doubt this is caused by the soon to be released pay 50 dollars a year to M$ and it will work on your xbox update.

Silverlight required now by NF

I signed up for an account yesterday (to use with PlayOn). I can't play movies in my WatchInstantly queue on my Xbox "content not supported" ... but I can see the movie cover, info, etc.

I can't play the movies on my PC without enabling Silverlight. Looks like PlayOn will only work with Silverlight supported.

how to opt out of Silverlight on Netflix

I didn't try this myself, but Netflix suggested cancelling your subscription, and getting a new one (with a different email address). Again, I don't know if it works, but you could give it a try...

I've only called Netflix once

I've only called Netflix once regarding my "inability" to use their instant watch feature, but that rep was of no assistance. Posting in their forum all I get is advise to buy one of their devices - that ain't happening. I have enough devices. There's no reason my uber PS3 can't play them.

If PlayOn gets to be working with Silverlight that's fine by me, though perhaps there are alternatives for moving forward?

Has anyone tried a new account?

has anyone tried canceling their account, setting up a new account without opting in for silverlight? I had to opt in when I wanted to stream my first movie to my laptop. I wonder if I had found playon first, qued the instant watch, and started watching movies straight to my PS3, if I could have avoided the silverlight curse altogether. You just could not stream or save movies to your PC.

I called netflix and asked if I could opt out of the silverlight beta and the girl actually chuckled. Silverlight seems like a licensing gig. Devices in the future will have to be certified $$$$ or some crap like that!

If anyone tries this let me know please!

Same issue here... paying member for both PlayOn and Netflix.

I too called Netflix about the Silverlight issue, as my fairly new account was forced into Silverlight status.

I was promptly told that ALL accounts will be forced into Silverlight over the next few days.

I'm a bit mad now, as I paid for PlayOn and Netflix simultaneously, in hopes of getting rid of my cable provider. (Charter)

Not really sure who to direct my irritation towards atm. Netflix for forcing the issue, or PlayOn for knowing this was an issue coming up REAL soon, and not having a fix for it yet.

I'd like to sign up for any beta/alpha I can that will rectify the Silverlight issue (I'll even submit reports if need be)... figure it's the least I can do since I've already thrown my monetary support in for the full version of PlayOn. Maybe MediaMall can fix the issue that Netflix doesn't seem to care less about.

Wonder if the Roku boxes are having the same issues.

Re: Same issue here... paying member for both PlayOn and Netflix

We are working as hard as we can to get Netflix Silverlight accounts supported in PlayOn. Things are looking very positive at the moment, though we still are having problems with the lower-tier Netflix accounts.

A significant portion of our user base have been on the Windows Media Player accounts with Netflix for some time, and have been trucking along just fine with PlayOn. And we have been just as surprised about the sudden Netflix Silverlight transition as the rest of you!

In any case, we are absolutely committed to providing an update soon that should accommodate new Silverlight accounts. We will keep you posted. A new release will be ready within a matter of days.

No worries

No worries here. (but the word 'days' is a bit evasive.... 10,000 days is still just a 'matter of days' ;)

I'm more PO'd about the fact that netflix just randomly decided to move people over without telling them ahead of time. So yes, even though you guys knew it was coming, I guess I should have been a bit more fair. There was no way you could have known they were just going to spring it on you as well.

Netflix seems to be getting too big for their pants, it seems. Either that, or it's all about their new partnership with M$.

Still.. thanks for all the hard work. It's not going unnoticed ;)

New Account

I am new to both netflix and playon. I signed up on 12/6 and I didn't see any options for silverlight during my netflix registation. So I assume I was created as a new user with silerlight and I get corrupted data on all netflix movies on my PS3. Hope this can be fixed before my 14 day trial on netflix and playon is over. I am also having some issues with Hulu but most seem to be working (HD movies do not)

Silverlight on all new accounts

I renewed my netflix account a few days ago. The account was WMP enabled at the time I canceled (a year ago). Once I renewed, I was automatically opted in the silverlight program. This makes the current release of playon useless for me. I browsed through these forums and see where mediamall gave eta's of a week or so on a silverlight compatible release. The problem is those posts are up to 5 weeks old, and still no release. I have since canceled my netflix account(they even gave me a refund).

Re: New Account

You almost certainly have a Silverlight account with Netflix, and the latest release of PlayOn doesn't work yet with these accounts. If we aren't able to push a release that accommodates Silverlight accounts before your trial expires, you can also elect to wait until the first official production release, as we will reset the trial period to a fresh 14 days.
