PlayOn DRM Reset Tool (THIS PAGE IS NO LONGER VALID!!!)

PlayOn

If you have seen a DRM error video message while using PlayOn, it most likely means that the DRM ("Digital Rights Management") repository on your PC is broken. When you attempt to view protected content from sites like Netflix, you must acquire a special DRM license from the site to watch the requested video. Normally, this happens automatically behind the scenes. But if your PC has a corrupted DRM system, it won't be able to successfully acquire the license.

The easiest remedy is to "reset" your DRM repository, so that the whole process can start from scratch. However, if you have any existing Windows Media DRM protected files on your PC and you reset your DRM system, you will need to to reacquire your license(s) for each of these files in order to watch them again.

In order to reset your DRM repository, perform the following steps:

  1. Stop the PlayOn Server in PlayOn Settings.
  2. Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services, and make sure that "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" and "Windows Media Center Receiver Service" are Stopped (if they exist).
  3. Download and run the DRM Reset Tool as a Windows Administrator. On Vista, this probably means you need to right click it and choose "Run this program as administrator". Confirm the results in the Notepad window say "CleanDRM succeeded".
  4. Restart the PlayOn Server in PlayOn Settings and try again.

If any of these steps fail, please send us a support request in PlayOn Settings, noting exactly what happened, and the PC timestamp from when you first saw the DRM error on your TV.

Good luck!
